Lo Manthang trek is one of the best and adventurous, trek in the upper Mustang region. In just 16 days, you will walk on varied landscapes, admiring the beautiful Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri Himals. You will admire how beautiful and amazing of a place is Mustang. Not just nature, but the people of the region, are sure to win our hearts. They teach us the proper way to treat our guests. The trail itself is very enjoyable but the mountains and the landscape, add icing to the cake.
We start our upper Mustang trek from Kathmandu. Travelling to Pokhara on the very next day, we will explore some of the beautiful places of the city. We then travel to Jomsom then trek to Kagbeni, on the next day. From Kagbeni to Chele, then we trek to Geling. On our journey to Geling, we enjoy the amazing view of the Nilgiri Himal dominating Annapurna Himal. From Geling, we continue our trek and reach Charang on the next day. From Cherang, we trek to Lo Manthang. We spend 2 nights at Lo Manthang. 2 nights are spent at Lo Manthang to better acclimatize to the climatic condition of the region.
From Lo Manthang, we trek to Dhakmar then, to Syangboche. We then continue our trek to Chhuksang. From Chhuksang, we trek to Kagbeni, then to Jomsom on the next day. Taking a flight back to Pokhara, we return back to Kathmandu.
In essence, you will have enjoyed the amazing natural, and cultural beauty of the upper Mustang region. In just 16 days of time, you will have travelled through varied landscapes, once again falling in love with nature. At the end, you will be left with beautiful memories and an amazing experience. You will travel back home, having travelled through some challenging and adventurous terrains.
Best Time to Trek
Lo Manthang trek, can be best enjoyed during Spring season (March-May), and also during Autumn season (September to November). Being a rain shadow area, Mustang doesn’t receive any rainfall during Monsoon season (June to August). This provides us great opportunity to visit Mustang during this time.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 : Arriving in Kathmandu
Today, on the very first day of our upper Mustang trek, you arrive at the beautiful capital city of Nepal – Kathmandu. Our representatives from Mountain Routes, pick you up at the airport, and take you to your hotels. You can satisfy your queries regarding the trek. After reaching your hotel, you can freshen up a bit, then go around exploring the beautiful city of Kathmandu. You will then return back to your hotel, and spend the night there.
Day 2 : Kathmandu to Pokhara (830 m) Trip Duration: 6 hours
On the second day of our Lo Manthang trek, we travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara via roadways. It takes about 6 hours to reach Pokhara, from Kathmandu. We have lunch on our way there.Upon reaching Pokhara, we go to our hotel, amd freshen up. Then, go around to explore beautiful city of lakes. We visit some of the major tourist destinations of the region. Then return to our hotel, to have dinner. Overnight at Pokhara.
Day 3 : Pokhara to Jomsom and Trek to Kagbeni (2810 m) Trip Duration: 20 minutes + 3-4 hours
Today, on our third day of the Lo Manthang trek, we travel from Pokhara to Jomsom by flight. It takes about 20 minutes to reach there. You will suddenly feel<br>
the difference in temperature, getting out of your plane. We then trek along a beautiful valley. We reach beautiful Ekal Bhatti village. Ekal Bhatti has flat roofed houses, and from there we continue our trek to Kagbeni. After trekking for some time, we reach Kagbeni. We then check into our hotel, have our lunch, and go around exploring the beautiful place. Overnight at Kagbeni.Day 4 : Kagbeni to Chele (2920 m) Trip Duration: 6-7 hours
On the 4th day of our upper Mustang trek, we hike from Kagbeni to Chele, which takes about 6-7 hours. The trail from Kagbeni to Chele is sanday and windy, and passes alongside the Kali Gandaki river. We then reach Tangbe village, where narrow alleyways, apple orchards, barley and buckwheat fields, will make us fall in love with the place. We then continue our trek, and pass another village along the way. Then cross a bridge, and walk on a narrow ridge, finally reaching our destination of today – Chele. We spend the night at Chele.
Day 5 : Chele to Geling (3570 m) Trip Duration: 5-6 hours
Today, on the 5th day of our Lo Manthang trek, we hike from Chele to Geling. We cross a ridge from Chele La, then enter a large sided valley and descend to Samar (3620 m). We will enjoy the beautiful views of the distant Annapurna Himal, standing tall. Nil Giri dominates the Annapurna Himal, provding an even amazing view. We then climb along the trail, up to Bhena La (3830 m) then to Bhena (3860 m). From there, we continue our climb to Yamdo la (4010 m) then, start descending along a steep ridge to Shyangmochen (3800 m). Descending further, we finally reach Geling. We then enjoy the beauty the place has to offer, and check into our lodge for staying the night.
Day 6 : Geling to Charang (3560 m) Trip Duration: 5-6 hours
On the 5th day of our upper Mustang trek, we hike from Geling to Charang. The trail climbs gently through the fields, passing below Tama Gaun. From Tama Gaun, we turn north and reach Nyi La (4020 m). We then descend steeply to Ghami (3510 m). Ghemi is a beautiful village surrounded by fields. People are busy working this arid landscape, and this is an interesting view. Our trail then takes us to Choya La (3870 m). From there, descending gently, we finally reach Charang. Overnight at Charang.
Day 7 : Charang to Lo Manthang (3840 m) Trip Duration: 5-6 hours
Our 7th day of the Lo Manthang trek, descends from Charang, crosses Charang Chu, then climbs steeply up a rocky trail. We then enter the Tholung valley. From there, the trail ascends, crossing a stream and reaching Lo La (3950 m). Lo La rewards us with the beautiful view of the walled city of Lo Manthang. We then start descending, and cross a stream before reaching Lo Manthang. Lo Manthang is a religious beauty, having several important chortens. The view there is very admirable. We then spend our night at Lo Manthang.
Day 8 : Acclimatization at Lo Manthang
We spend 8th day of Lo Manthang trek acclimatizing to the climatic conditions of the region, at Lo Manthang. We also explore some nearby places including, 3 major gompas. They are Jhampa, Thupchen and Chhoeda. We also have another option to utilize this day. This includes visiting the nearby beautiful village of Tingkar. After returning from there, we check into our lodge and spend the night there.
Day 9 : Lo Manthang to Dhakmar (3800 m) Trip Duration: 7-8 hours
Today, we trek from Lo Manthang to Dhakmar, which takes about 7-8 hours of time. Today’s upper Mustang trek is long and stretchy one, so we start early. Embarking upon the trail, we first reach Gyakar village which has an old gompa – Ghar gompa. Ghar gompa has many beautiful rock paintings, and is about a century old. From there, we continue our trek to Dhakmar. We are accompanied by the amazing views of the majestic mountains on the south, along the way. After reaching Dhakmar, we take rest and have dinner. Overnight at Dhakmar.
Day 10 : Dhakmar to Syangboche Trip Duration: 4-5 hours
On the 10th day of our Lo Manthang trek, we hike from Dhakmar to Syangboche. We trace our steps back, today. Enjoying the beautiful missed-out views along the way, we finally reach Syangboche. From Syangboche, amazing view of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri Himals can be admired. Overnight at Syangboche.
Day 11 : Syangboche to Chhuksang (3040 m) Trip Duration: 5-6 hours
Today, on the 11th day of our upper Mustang trek, we hike from Syanboche to Chhuksang, which takes us about 5-6 hours. We will have a great opportunity to admire Chungsi cave monastery, on our way there. This cave monastery dates back to the 7th century and acts as a very interesting subject to admire. After exploring the monastery for some time, we continue our trek to Chukksang, and finally reach there in some time. Overnight at Chhuksang.
Day 12 : Chhuksang to Kagbeni to Jomsom Trip Duration: 6-7 hours
On the 12th day of our Lo Manthang trek, we hike from Chhuksang to Kagbeni then to Jomsom. It takes us about 6-7 hours to complete this trek. On our way, we will enjoy the beautiful views of the amazing Nilgiri HImal. From Chhuksang, it will take us about 4 hours to reach Kagbeni. At Kagbeni, we have our lunch then, continue our trek. Jomsom is 3 hours nfrom Kagbeni, and we will reach there remembering, what an amazing journey we’ve had. Upon reaching Jomsom, you can have a hot shower to wash away all the tiredness of the journey. We will also enjoy a good dinner at Jomsom then, spend the night taking proper rest.
Day 13 : Jomsom to Pokhara Trip Duration: 20 minutes
Today, we take a flight from Jomsom to Pokhara. It takes about 20 minutes to reach Pokhara. We check into our hotels, after reaching Pokhara, then go around to explore some major, tourist attraction spots there. After spending some time enjoying the natural beauty this place has to offer, we go back to our hotels. We will have dinner at Lakeside, enjoying the beautiful Fewa lake. We can also enjoy the beautiful night life there. Overnight at Pokhara.
Day 14 : Pokhara to Kathmandu Trip Duration: 6 hours
We travel back from Pokhara to Kathmandu, today, on 14th day of our upper Mustang trek. It takes about 6 hours via roadways. We have our lunch on the way. Upon reaching Kathmandu, we check into our hotel and freshen up a bit. We then go around to explore some parts of the Kathmandu city. You can also do some shopping, to take back with you as a souvenir. At night, you can enjoy the exciting night life of Thamel. A good night’s sleep is all that is left for the day.
Day 15 : Exploring the capital – Kathmandu
We spare the 15th day of Lo Manthang trek to explore some of the major tourists’ attractions at and nearby Kathmandu. We will be sure not to miss places including Bouddha Nath, Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, and so on. These places along with some other, will provide a great door way to the cultural insight of the country. You are sure to be startled upon visiting these places. After visiting these places, we return back to our hotel and rest there.
Day 16 : Departure
Today, is the last day of our upper Mustang trek and also your last day in Nepal. Our representatives pick you up from your hotel, then take you to the airport. We then share goodbyes and bade each other farewell. You will board the plane with beautiful memories and an amazing experience. With some part of you touched during the last 16 days, you will have an adventurous story to pass down through generations.
