[Travel Alert] Sudden flood hits key Langtang Entry Points in Nepal : Rasuwa Flood 2026

Nature Always Has the Final Say . It was an unexpected and a tragic call today morning in Nepal.

An enormous flash flood entered Nepal from Tibet on the morning of August 26, 2026. The water skyrocketed  into the Bhote Koshi River yesterday. It  caused severe damage in Rasuwa district and became a threat to many lives and property.

The areas of Syapru Besi (Syabrubesi) and Timure in the mountainous district of Rasuwa, with a population of about 50,000, were severely affected. 

The officials has  requested everyone living on the banks of the Bhote Koshi river to seek higher ground as soon as possible.

These two places are the main gateway for the popular Langtang trek, so the situation got more critical to  most of the  trekkers and travelers.

What Has Been Washed Away in the flood ?

In Rasuwa:

• Markets, houses, hotels, and vehicles in Timure and Syabrubesi 
• Hydropower projects and the customs area
• A helipad and some police offices

In Nuwakot (downstream):

• Around 60 houses near Trishuli Bazar.
• Two concrete bridges over the Trishuli River.
• Damage to Trishuli and Devighat hydropower projects.
• Three blocks and a substation of a 25-megawatt solar power plant

Electricity supply in the region has been disturbed because of this calamity . Many more hydropower projects in Rasuwa and Nuwakot have also been affected.

Flood Continues Moving Downstream

At 10:51 AM on August 26, the Flood Forecasting Division reported that the flood has reached near Galchhi in Dhading . It is expected to cross Mugling in the next few hours which did it later.

Authorities continue to warn people living along the Trishuli River in Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan to move to safer higher places. This was a nature’s call so uncertainty got a way to killing numerous lives here.

Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has requested the public to avoid traveling along the Prithvi Highway, Galchhi-Nuwakot-Rasuwа-Syafrubesi road, and Muglin-Narayangadh road following flooding in the Bhotekoshi River.

Travelers are suggested to stay alert and avoid these routes until the situation becomes safer. 

What the Government is doing at this time ?

Prime Minister Balendra (Balen) Shah has ordered all agencies for the greater rescue operation and relief work. Here is what is happening right now:

• Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police have been fully mobilized
• Extra security personnel have been sent from other districts
• 12 helicopters (4 Army and 8 private) are in operation for rescue
• Medical teams, Nepal Scouts and Red Cross have been activated.
• Residents in downstream areas like Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Chitwan have been ordered to move to safer places.
• High-level meetings of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and NDRRMA are ongoing.
• All available helicopters have been kept on standby.

The Army has already rescued 12 people by helicopter.

Note : 28 police personnel are currently reported missing. This includes 9 Armed Police Force members from the Timure Border Out Post. One of them is Inspector Ambir Khatri. Search operations are ongoing till this time.

No official death toll has been confirmed yet. This is in fact a developing situation.

Why Trekking in Monsoon Is Risky ?

The current flood is a clear reminder of the dangers of trekking during the monsoon season (June to September) in the Langtang region:

• Roads to Syabrubesi can close suddenly due to landslides or floods. It is a great risk
• Trails become muddy, slippery, and unstable to walk around.
• Rivers and streams rise very fast.
• Landslides are very common and this incident is a true remainder
• Helicopter rescue becomes difficult and visibility becomes very poor.

Safety Tips for Langtang Trekkers

Traveling to Langtang after this incident is nearly impossible. This goes on at least for some months. Here are few safety tips for your use :

• Avoid traveling to Syabrubesi and Timure until the road is officially reopened.
• Stay away from all rivers (Bhote Koshi and Trishuli) right now.
• If you are already in the area, move to higher ground and follow police instructions.
• Always trek with a licensed guide during monsoon.
• Start walking early in the morning and reach teahouses before afternoon rains.
• Never cross swollen rivers or fresh landslide areas.
• Keep extra buffer days in your itinerary for possible road blocks.
• Check daily weather and road updates with your hotel or agency.

Damage spreads to Nuwakot Markets

The flood that started in Rasuwa has now caused serious damage in several parts of Nuwakot district.

According to Rajan Shrestha who is the Mayor of Bidur Municipality, Betrawati Bazaar has suffered the most destruction. Trishuli Bazaar has also been heavily damaged.The Central Jail has been flooded heavily by floodwater. Devighat Bazaar is under water as well.

Mayor Shrestha said that the local officials learned that the flood had reached Nuwakot at around 9 am. 

Teams are currently assessing and confirming the exact places where damage has occurred.

This new information shows that the impact is not limited to Rasuwa. 

The main key market areas and even the district jail in Nuwakot have been affected as the water moved downstream along the Trishuli River.
