Kanchenjunga Trekking, home to Mount Kanchanjungha, was regarded as the world’s highest mountain up until 1852. Only after the study was conducted in the same year, it was then stated that Kanchanjunga happened to be the third highest peak in the world. This mountain was first climbed by Joe Bown and George Brad in the year 1955 and since then, there have been many who tried to climb the mighty Kachanjunga.
Kanchanjunga Conservation Area was then established in the year 1997 which covers a total area of 786 square kilometers of the region. The date portrays that the history is not that old. As a result, this area is not tempered. You get to walk through lush green vegetation without a trace of any human interference whatsoever.
Meanwhile, this region is filled up with amazing floras and faunas. Trekkers get to enjoy the presence of red-billed chough, snow cock, golden breasted fulvetta, red panda, blue sheep, Asian black bear, and sometimes even snow leopard can be seen. You get to walk through beautiful Juniper, Rhododendron and pine forests, that are sure to leave you dumb founded.
The trek starts after we take our flight up to Suketar from Kathmandu. In the capital itself, we come across various amazing places. Suketar, the starting area of our trek is made up of alpine grasslands, outcrops, dense temperatures, grasslands, and subtropical forests. There are low river valleys with Kanchanjunga as the crown. The scenery this region has to offer is something, which likes you have never seen before.
The botanical biodiversity of Kanchanjunga is known for its global hub for plants. There are 30 rhododendron and 69 orchid species in this area. Along with other many species of floras and faunas, this trekking region offers the travelers a wonderful feeling of exploring the untouched nature.
During this trek, you come across various temples and monasteries. This makes the trek even more beautiful, signifying the religious and cultural importance of the region. There will also be amazing landscapes at your every sight.
There are various areas to trek around here. You might want to trek around Kanchanjunga, South Kanchanjunga, North Kanchanjunga, Milke Dada, Pathivara, or Tamor Trek. During this trek, you walk along with other beautiful mountains like Yalung Kang (8505 m), Kambachen (7903 m), Janu (7710 m), Jongsong (7483 m), Kabru (7353 m), Tent Peak (7365 m) etc. And all these trekking areas are competitively beautiful than each other.
You can also reach this conservation area by bus through Dharan, or jeep from Birtamod. A total of around 22 days trekking would be enough to explore this wonderful region. We stay at lodges on availability, but most of the time our overnight will be spent at a tent house itself making this trek even more exciting.
And, you overcome through the mixed society of Rai, Sherpa, Limbu, and Gurung inhabitants here. They all have different cultural lifestyles which you get to experience hereby. Tongba is a popular drink in this region that you should not miss at all. People of this region are friendly and show real warm hospitality. Demographically, this is a sparsely populated region.
To best enjoy the trek, visit this region from February to May and August to November.
